What is Broadband Wireless Access? We have come a long way since 2.4 Kbytes modems used to be the solution to transfer files from one PC to another. We now have the capability to generate and process massive amounts of data from our desktop. An always-growing range of applications leaves us craving more capacity. That is the underlying reason of "Broadband" development. But there is one issue. Between the desktop and the Fiber backbone is that stretch of the information highway, known as the 'last mile' or Access portion of the network. "Broadband Access" can be served by several Broadband technologies:
Financial analysts, recognizing Alcatel's leadership in the emerging Broadband Wireless Access market have characterized Broadband Wireless as "Alcatel's next DSL". Indeed, in the past months solid customers relying on our leading-edge products available now for mass deployment have been secured. Broadband wireless offers both established and emerging service providers a quick and cost-effective way to enter the local access market with solutions and technologies designed to meet today's demand for the delivery of data, voice and high speed Internet services, as well as tomorrow's demand for enhanced digital telephony, video and multimedia services. The Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) market encompasses all Point-To-Multipoint radio access networks and technologies able to offer rates of up to 40 Mb/s per End-User termination. High Speed Internet (HSI) services to SMEs, SOHOs and, under specific conditions, residential users are among the main drivers fuelling a sustained growth in demand for broadband wireless. The BWA space includes a variety of technologies, frequency bands and related markets ruled by regulators all over the world. As of today, the most strategic frequency bands on a worldwide basis are the 3.5GHz, the 10 GHz and the 24-38GHz bands. The latter is often referred to as Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS). Alcatel has today two leading-edge product lines serving both the 3.5GHz and LMDS market segments. This leads to a New Market and Service Concept, based on Bandwidth, Multi Service (Voice, Data…), and Quality of Service. But more importantly this leads CAPs/CLECs to fast Return on Investment and quick capture of Market Share, as BWA allows:
"Global service revenues for broadband wireless are projected to reach US $16B by 2004," says Jamie Mendelson, Senior Analyst, Strategis Group. "This represents a compound annual growth rate of 140%." As a conclusion, we can say that these wireless-based solutions meet a growing and well spread need of our times. Therefore, they are key assets within Alcatel's broadband access portfolio. Processor performance will continue to improve, and fiber optics transmission capacity will continue to increase. And likely, somewhere in the middle, you'll find a broadband access solution from Alcatel. |
