ISDN SwitchingExecutive OverviewATLAS provides a low-cost solution for ISDN switching in applications such as video- conferencing or standalone ISDN test laboratories. With the ATLAS 800, you are no longer required to purchase as many ISDN circuits from your local service provider. The ISDN equipment can now connect directly to ATLAS and avoid those costly monthly service charges. IntroductionThe ADTRAN ATLAS 800 integrated access device implements an industry standard ISDN switch within its small footprint and provides the normal ISDN switching capabilities that you would find in a central office. In fact, one way to think of ATLAS is as a low-cost, mini central office in your own facility. ISDN devices that would normally connect to the public ISDN network can now connect directly to ATLAS. ATLAS will perform like the public network, and your ISDN equipment will operate just as if it were connected to an ISDN circuit going from your facility out to an ISDN service provider. The benefit is that for any local or on-premises calls - calls that originate from one office in your facility to another office in the same facility - are self contained in ATLAS and avoid the ISDN service charges.
ATLAS SolutionATLAS provides industry standard Basic Rate Interfaces (BRI), Primary Rate Interfaces (PRI) and switching intelligence compatible with Lucent 4ESS/5ESS, Nortel DMS-100, and National ISDN-1 switches. All this is provided in a scaleable, small footprint, and economical device. The ATLAS 800 is an eight-slot modular device allowing customers to configure it as needed and provides capacity for up to 64 BRIs or 128 D-channels. An Octal BRI module is available with eight BRI U-Interfaces and a Quad PRI/T1 module is also available. These modules can be user installed to configure ATLAS as an ISDN switch either in standalone mode or connected with the public network. ISDN calls are processed inside ATLAS based upon the number that is dialed. The ATLAS switching technology reads the dialed ISDN telephone number and dynamically determines the appropriate destination. If the dialed number is destined for a device located on premises, then ATLAS will switch from one local source to another local destination. If the call is destined for an external or off-premises location, then ATLAS will read the dialed number and switch the circuit out to the public network. With ATLAS, customers can implement overbooking and allow more ISDN devices to be connected than there is telco circuit bandwidth. This is similar to most PBXs, where there are more telephones connected to the PBX than there are lines going out. That's because 99% of the time, not all the telephones need an outside line simultaneously. Similarly, in many video-conferencing corporate environments, not all the video stations are used at the same time, and the external network lines can be significantly reduced with ATLAS. Rather than each ISDN piece of equipment requiring its own ISDN line, the switching and overbooking support in ATLAS allows you to directly connect each ISDN piece of equipment into ATLAS, resulting in a cost-saving reduction of WAN circuits. Decide based upon your own traffic patterns just how much telco bandwidth is needed. SummaryATLAS 800 is being used in corporate environments and in laboratory environments to provide a full ISDN switched network without the normal monthly costs typically incurred using ISDN. This level of switching capability may be considered as too expensive, but ATLAS has been designed to be a low-cost alternative with payback on the equipment as short as six months.
