Private Frame Relay NetworkingExecutive OverviewWith the new ATLAS 800PLUS and its frame relay capabilities, you can now elegantly and economically gather a large number of voice/data T1 circuits at the central site without the expense of large numbers of router and PBX digital ports. Unlike any other T1 access device, the new ATLAS 800PLUS will bring together up to 34 T1 lines from your remote sites, dynamically route the data to the LAN and switch the voice calls to the PBX phone system. IntroductionWith the increasing attractiveness of T1, ADTRAN has developed a single platform solution designed to optimize your present environment and combine voice, video, and data traffic over the same network. If you have requirements to pass voice, data, and video from a number of remote sites to a central site, the new ATLAS 800PLUS now offers an intelligent platform that dynamically switches the voice to the PBX while simultaneously routing the data packets directly to your LAN. The following diagram shows and end-to-end solution which combines voice and data across the same line and hubs T1s into a central-site ATLAS 800PLUS for switching and routing.
With the new ATLAS 800PLUS, you can reduce the number of PBX T1 ports using the ATLAS dial plan switching. Unlike a traditional DACS, the ATLAS 800PLUS implements a higher level of switching intelligence to pull out the voice number dialed and dynamically determine the phone call path. With ATLAS, you do not need to nail up channels to the PBX from every remote voice site. Instead, ATLAS accepts all the remote voice calls and dynamically circuit switches the call to the destination - whether to the attached PBX or off premises. Based upon your voice traffic patterns, you may be able to reduce your PBX digital T1 ports and off-load some of the call switching to ATLAS. The ATLAS 800PLUS also provides innovative data routing solutions for gathering a number of remote data sites into a single central LAN. On the same T1 circuit passing voice traffic, each of the remote sites can add LAN data traffic through ADTRAN's creative use of T1 frame relay technologies. At each remote site, the LAN data is passed into the T1 (along with voice) using the TSU's internal frame relay and IP router and then sent to the central site. At the central site, an ATLAS 800PLUS terminates all the T1s and acts as a frame relay switch and IP router by routing the remote LAN data traffic directly onto the corporate LAN. ATLAS SolutionWith this unique ADTRAN solution, customers will create an integrated network of high quality voice and LAN-to-LAN data - without the additional costs of adding digital, high-speed T1 ports to your PBX and router. In fact, if you choose, you can eliminate a central site router altogether and use the internal routing functionality in the new ATLAS 800PLUS. But if you prefer to use external routers, you can certainly interconnect external routers of your choice at both the remote and central sites. The ATLAS 800PLUS frame relay software pulls the LAN data from the T1 circuit and performs industry standard IP routing. The data from each remote LAN is packaged in frame relay across the T1. The ATLAS 800PLUS dynamically switches the frame relay data from the T1s, performs IP routing, and forwards the data out from its 10BaseT Ethernet port directly onto any industry standard Ethernet LAN. ADTRAN calls this private frame relay networking, because all the sites are connected directly instead of indirectly connecting through a third-party network service. This private voice/data networking can prove to be cost-effective - especially when combining the voice, data, and video switching at the host site. With private networking, the voice is high quality and eliminates long distance charges. The data network works like a public frame relay network, except now you have complete control and unlimited use at a fixed price. SummaryUsing the new ATLAS 800PLUS with frame relay, offers innovative solutions for combining voice, video, and data onto the same circuit, resulting in reduced network costs, lower equipment capital, and easier start-up and installation. Using the ATLAS 800PLUS along with the family of remote site intelligent TSU router multiplexers, ADTRAN offers industry leading, end-to-end solutions for merging voice/data/video traffic into a single network.
