Florida Credit Union Excited About ATLAS 800 PerformanceExecutive SummaryInterlink Communication Systems (ICS) is an ADTRAN Distribution Partner, and one of the first to be certified on the ATLAS 800 product line. ICS offers pre-configuration and installation support services to certified ADTRAN reseller partners. Last December, ICS joined forces with Netlink Technologies, Inc., an ADTRAN Premier Access Partner, on a project for Florida Credit Union in Gainesville, FL, This is one of the first installations of the ATLAS 800 integrated access system. Customer ProblemInstallation of the device replaced a frame relay network, deployed only eight months earlier to handle data transmission between the central site in Gainesville and five remote sites throughout Florida. To eliminate long distance charges, the organization was looking for a solution that combined voice and data traffic over a single network service. The logical answer was a point-to-point T1 service designed to integrate both voice and data on a single digital access line. ADTRAN ATLAS SolutionMichael Morris, vice president of information services at the Florida Credit Union, sought out the advice of a number of reliable technical resources and solicited suggestions for equipment to fulfill his requirements. The ADTRAN ATLAS 800 integrated access system was the recommendation heard most often. A big plus was that ATLAS would allow concentration of circuits, while utilizing existing equipment. Morris contacted a consultant to get his approval of the ATLAS 800 device and, after reviewing the product specifications, the consultant endorsed its use in the Florida Credit Union's application. Seventeen DS0s on each T1 link are allocated to voice, and five carry synchronous data traffic to a router. The ATLAS 800 converts the PBX PRI voice signaling to T1 signaling for transport over the T1 links, and transmits data via frame relay. ATLAS supports T1 bandwidth management, squeezing as much out of a T1 circuit as possible. Brian Elder, a systems engineer at Interlink Communication Systems, was given only one day's notice that the customer was ready for his new hardware cutover. No stranger to ADTRAN products, Brian configured the product in the ICS lab and scheduled ADTRAN Systems Engineer, Charlie Wilson, to verify the configuration, including a dial-up modem for remote access. The actual installation proceeded without incident. Problems? "Sure," said Morris. "Every time we have a little glitch, the other vendors would suggest the problem was with ADTRAN equipment. But that has never proved to be the case. Usually, it's simply a problem with telephone service. We even bought a second unit as a hot spare. It's just sitting there on the shelf. We've never had to use it."
