Converting BRI to PRI for Remote Access Servers

Executive Overview

In many parts of the country, a PRI circuit is more expensive than multiple BRI circuits. For example, a PRI circuit may cost $2,100 per month, and a single line BRI may cost $50 per month. Twelve BRI lines provide the equivalent capacity for only $600 a month. Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use remote access concentrators with an integral PRI. ATLAS 800 can front-end the concentrator and convert multiple BRI lines to PRI, saving customers significant recurring monthly costs.

ATLAS Solution

The 12 BRI lines provide 24 BRI channels that will be switched and converted into the PRI interface for the Remote Access Server (RAS). The PRI between ATLAS and the RAS will support 23 simultaneous BRI channels.

The ATLAS Octal BRI module includes:

  • Eight BRI/U-Interfaces
  • Eight RJ45-RJ11 cables
  • Hot swappable capability
  • Lucent 5ESS(R), Nortel DMS100 and National ISDN compatibility

Summary

In this application, ATLAS operates as an industry standard tabletop ISDN BRI/PRI switch, so the RAS operates just as if it were connected directly to a public Integrated Services Digital Network. Many customers are now using ATLAS to convert BRI to PRI and significantly reduce their monthly ISDN costs.
