American Research Group (ARG) Training Departments Reduce Network Costs with ATLASExecutive SummaryAs the need to provide high-quality hands-on training grows, several organizations are realizing the benefits and reduced costs of implementing standalone training networks based on the ISDN capabilities of ADTRAN's ATLAS 800. Hardware manufacturers, schools, universities, training vendors and evaluation labs are purchasing ATLAS 800 platforms outfitted with BRI and PRI modules to create their own private ISDN or T1 networks. Capable of providing Primary and Basic Rate ISDN to end-users without a local provider, this solution eliminates costly monthly circuit charges and provides more in-house control over deployment and usage. Customer ProblemIn a training lab at American Research Group (ARG), 16 BRI lines were being used by students learning ISDN technology and protocol analysis. The lines from the local telephone company were costing $90 each per month for unlimited voice and data service for a total of more than $1,400 every month. The circuits were a vital part of ARG's training programs, but they were becoming expensive. In between classes, the telephone lines were not being used and became a part of fixed overhead costs. A new way to turn up circuits for the class and then terminate them was needed to be more dynamic and cost-effective. Not only were the telephone circuits underutilized, they were impossible to put in a suitcase and carry to a customer who preferred on-site training. The immobility of the circuits was limiting ARG's ability to grow a part of its ISDN training business, because it forced customers to travel to ARG locations that had in-house ISDN circuits ADTRAN ATLAS SolutionThe ISDN lines were replaced using an ATLAS 800 with two octal BRI cards. At an approximate cost of $10,000 for ATLAS, this particular training organization will payback the hardware costs in seven months and save $1,400 per month thereafter. With ATLAS 800, training centers specializing in hands-on application courses gain the ability to provide their students with working circuits; to simulate installation of networking products such as routers, remote access solutions and video-conferencing systems; and then to enjoy seeing the applications work when completed. Such courses can also offer troubleshooting scenarios by "breaking" an in-house circuit, or demonstrating complex dial backup disaster recovery solutions. David Mantica, Product Manager of WAN Classes at American Research Group, a subsidiary of Global Knowledge Networks (http://am.globalknowledge.com) says, "Our instructors love the ADTRAN products. They just work! They keep going even after weekly shipping around the country for our courses." American Research Group provides real-world training on networking technologies including routing, switching, ISDN and wide area networks using ATLAS to create hands-on lab networks. In addition to training, ATLAS allows evaluation labs to simulate real-world dial-up networks based on Basic Rate and Primary Rate ISDN. Without ordering expensive lines dedicated for testing purposes, ISPs can evaluate their hardware choices and switch simulated BRI users to PRI devices just as the local telephone company does. Some companies use ATLAS-based ISDN to test video-conferencing equipment selections before widespread deployment, and IT Managers have used ATLAS to test dial backup solutions for disaster recovery plans before ordering ISDN services. In large installations, this testing can reduce the amount of time spent evaluating and implementing plans.
