Remote Power Management

Remote Power Management provides a modern, high-tech solution to one of the most fundamental tasks of the electric age—turning on and off the power to your electronic devices.

The problem addressed by Remote Power Management products is how to handle a whole army of devices, perhaps numbering in the hundreds, or even thousands, that are remotely distributed throughout a large building, an entire campus, or even in different cities or on separate continents.

Moxa's new Network Power Switch Server, named NPower Commander, provides OnOff control of electronic devices over both an Ethernet LAN/WAN connection and by telephone. In fact, NPower Commander allows basic OnOff control via a direct phone connection, as well as through a modem by way of an ISP Internet account. NPower Commander also provides automatic OnOff control that can be set up and activated over the Internet or by phone, and gives the administrator the ability to safely shut down and reboot Windows NT/2000 servers. In addition, Moxa provided APIs are provided to speed up your development time and make it easy to build up automation applications.

Remote Power Management applications can be found in many places. Even when dealing with relatively small numbers of equipment, such as in a medium sized store or machine shop, the convenience that Moxa NPower Commander offers can be well worth the investment. We highlight here three of the more common applications.

Mass Computer Management

Many of the larger Internet related companies, such as ISPs (Internet Service Providers), IDCs (Internet Data Centers), and Data Warehouses, employ large numbers of Windows NT or Windows 2000 servers to support their clients' needs. These are the types of businesses for which a crashed server can cost thousands of dollars per minute. With this in mind, imagine the convenience of being able to remotely power-up, power-down, and safely shutdown/reboot these multitudes of PCs, either over the Internet using a web browser, or from a regular telephone connection. The NPower Commander NT-models come with built-in safe-shutdown ports that work in conjunction with your server's NT/2000 UPS service to provide just such safe shutdown/reboot capability.

Remotely OnOff Any Unattended Devices

Critical service agencies, such as remote weather centers and early-warning stations, that provide for the public safety and well-being, use electrical and electronic equipment which absolutely must remain up and running. In fact, for unmanned sites, it could take several hours or days for maintenance personnel to reach the location and handle critical situations. Installing a Network Power Switch Server such as NPower Commander at these locations can provide the extra control needed to avert major catastrophes.

Complete IT Management Solution from Moxa

Combining MOXA Async Server with NPower Commander provides system administrators with a complete Console Management and Power OnOff solution that can be used with workstations, servers, routers, and other similar equipment. By using Async Server and NPower Commander together, system administrators not only have access to centralized Console Management over an Ethernet, but also have the luxury of being able to remotely OnOff the power to the usual array of devices.

Advantages and Benefits

Moxa NPower Commander can be used to streamline your maintenance personnel's schedules by giving them centralized OnOff control of large numbers of electronic devices. Not only can your organization save on power bills by being better able to switch off devices that are not in use, but you will also be able to reduce system downtime to prevent financial loss and damage to your company's reputation.
