Question
|
Why is it sometimes possible to Ping and
Telnet NPort Server, but NPort Server Manager and Firmware Utility
fail to find the NPort Server? |
|
Applies To:
|
NPort Server Pro: DE303/308.
NPort Server Lite: DE301/302/304/331/332/334.
NPort Express: DE311/311M. |
|
Answer
|
There are 2 possible
causes of this situation.
- The PC and
Nport Server are connected via a router.
- The PC and
Nport Server are connected via a NAT server.
[Solution]
- If the PC and
Nport Server are connected via a router:
You can assign an
IP manually from NPort Manager (or Utility), instead of using Auto
search.
- The PC and
NPort Server are connected via a NAT server:
The following
procedure solves this problem:
a. Upgrade the
NPort Server firmware and driver to the latest versions; the
programs can be downloaded from
http://web..com.tw/services/download/download.asp.
b. Type the
NPort Server IP address manually when using NPort Manager or
Firmware Utility.
c. Ask your
Network Administrator to open UDP ports 0x404 and 0x405. Both NPort
Server Manager and Firmware Utility will broadcast a "locate
request" to search for NPort Servers on the LAN.
Since a Router will filter all broadcast packets, neither NPort
Utility nor NPort Manager can find an NPort Server located outside a
Router. Hence, the locate request packet is filtered by the Router,
and the NAT Server not only filters the broadcast packet but also
changes the source TCP/UDP port for each IP packet.
The previous firmware version of NPort Server will check the UDP
port of the sender before replying. That 's why NPort Server can't
be found through a NAT Server. The latest firmware version has
solved this problem.

How do I establish a TCP connection in Raw
Connection mode when using NPort Server Pro? |
|
Applies To:
|
NPort Server Pro DE303/308 |
|
Answer
|
The following
procedures show you how to establish a TCP connection in RAW
connection mode.
- Telnet NPort
Server Pro's IP address.
- In the [OP_mode]
menu, set [Mode] to "RAW Connection".
- In
[Description / more setting] , set [TCP port] as needed; note that
the default [TCP port] value is [4001].
For example, if
NPort Pro's IP is 192.168.127.254 (default value), simply issue the
command "telnet 192.168.127.254 4001" to establish a TCP connection.

Question
|
How is the NPort Server Family's firmware
upgraded under Windows2000? |
|
Applies To:
|
Nort Server Lite: DE301/302/304/DE331/332/334
NPort Server Pro: DE308/303
NPort Express: DE311/311M |
|
Answer
|
At this time, NPort
Server Family's Windows 2000 driver does not support the [NPort
Manager] utility.
The method for upgrading NPort Server Family's firmware under
Windows 2000 is as follows.
- First
download NPort Family's latest Windows 2000 driver, which includes
an "Upgrade.exe" utility (software is located at the web site
at http://web..com.tw/services/download/download.asp).
- Run "Upgrade.exe".
This utility starts by searching for NPort devices connected to the
network.
- After an
NPort device is found, select the new firmware and upgrade it.
- If no NPort
Server Devices could be found, you will need to input an IP address
manually. After an NPort device is found, you can upgrade the
firmware.

Question
|
I am unable to use the first computer
installed with Single-Host Mode to access NPort Server Pro. |
|
Applies To:
|
NPort Server Pro: DE303/DE308 |
|
Answer
|
For
security reasons, and to simplify operations, Single-Host Mode allows
only one host to connect to an NPort Server Pro at a time.
If you have already set up one host to use an NPort Server Pro with
Single-Host Mode, but did not set up a password, it's possible that
another user has set up their own machine to use the same NPort Server
Pro under Single-Host Mode. If this is the case, you will no longer be
able to access NPort Server Pro.
If you wish to use more than one host to access the same NPort Server
Pro, you will need to install NPort Server Pro under Custom Mode.

Question
|
I am unable to change the IP address or
other server properties. |
|
Applies To:
|
NPort Server Pro: DE303/DE308 |
|
Answer
|
There are two
situations that could give rise to this problem.
1. Password
Mismatch
If you type
the wrong password while running NPort Pro Manager, the Manager
program automatically assumes that you are not the administrator.
The administrator of the server is the only one allowed to modify
the server's configuration. Keep in mind that even when multiple
hosts share the same server, access to the server's administrative
functions is still protected.
If you need to
change some configuration settings, you will have to ask your
administrator for help. If you are the administrator but forget the
password, you can erase the current password yourself by pressing
the RESET key on NPort Server Pro's back panel for three seconds.
2. Installation
Type Mismatch
You cannot
change the server IP address if you are installing NPort Server Pro
under Single-Host Mode. Setting the installation procedure up in
this way makes the Single-Host Mode configuration procedure very
similar to installing a traditional multi-port serial board.
Under
Single-Host Mode, users are only allowed to modify the server's name
and password. This is because Single-Host users are not sharing
their NPort Server Pro with other hosts.
If you do need
to modify other properties, run the setup program and change to
another mode of operation (see Chapter 8 of the NPort Server Pro
User's Manual for details).

Question
|
After installing NPort Server Pro, the
NPort Pro Manager program indicates "'Un-authorized" status for some
of the ports. |
|
Applies To:
|
NPort Server Pro: DE303/DE308 |
|
Answer
|
This means that
NPort Server Pro's Access Control List does not contain your
computer's correct IP address. This can happen in one of two ways:
[POSSIBILITY]
- Your NT/95/98
machine is just one of the hosts sharing the ports on the selected
server, and you did not provide the server password while installing
NPort Server Pro.
- You install
NPort Server Pro at a local site, with no access problems, but later
move the server to a remote site and connect through a WAN. Due to
the different network interface connection, your IP address might
have changed, and as a consequence, you are no longer on the
server's Access Control List.
[SOLUTION]
- Confirm your
IP address with NPort Server Pro.
- Ask the
administrator to set up the server configuration so that you are on
NPort Server Pro's Access Control List.

Question
|
While running NPort Pro Manager, a
question mark (?) shows up on top of the server icon, and you are
unable to enter server properties. |
|
Applies To:
|
NPort Server Pro: DE303/DE308 |
|
Answer
|
This means that the host cannot find the server. Here are some steps
you can take to recover from this problem:
If the
host and server are in the same location:
- Make sure
NPort Server Pro's power cable is plugged in, and the server is
receiving power.
- Check that
the server's network connector is plugged in properly.
- Make sure
your computer is properly connected to the network.
- Double click
on the server icon that has the question mark (?) on top. This will
evoke NPort Pro Manager to reconnect with the server.
If the server
is at remote site:
- Make sure the
network connection to the remote site is okay. If no route can be
established to the remote server, and you are connecting through the
Internet, you may need to wait until the route is reestablished.
- If the route
is okay, try typing
ping [server-IP-address]
from your NT host, where [server-IP-address] is the server's IP
address.
- If the server
cannot be pinged, you will need to ask someone at the remote site to
check and see if the power is on, and make sure that the connection
is okay. After that, double click on the server icon that has the
question mark (?) on top. This will evoke NPort Pro Manager to
reconnect with the server.
If the problem
is still not fixed, contact technical support for further
assistance.

Question
|
You cannot find the server after rebooting
your Windows NT/95/98 server. |
|
Applies To:
|
NPort Server Pro: DE303/DE308 |
|
Answer
|
It's possible that you have a DHCP server on your network. Since DHCP
servers can assign IP addresses, the IP address for either the host or
NPort Server Pro might have been changed.
To recover from
this problem, you should:
- Ask the
administrator of your DHCP server to assign a dedicated IP address
to both your Windows NT/95/98 host and to NPort Server Pro.
- Make sure
your NPort Manager Pro operating mode is either Multi-Host Mode or
Custom Mode.
- Change the IP
address of the server to the dedicated IP address assigned by your
DHCP administrator.
- Change the IP
address of your Windows NT/95/98 host to the dedicated IP address
assigned by your DHCP administrator.
Note: Please refer to Appendix D of the User's Manual to learn how
to configure your Windows NT/95/98 to the dedicated IP address.
- Modify the
Security list to include your NT/95/98 host.
- Save
Configuration.
