Gas Distribution Monitoring and Control System

_____________________________________________________________________________
Nuclear safety and harmful coal burning emissions often arouse
a public concerned with energy usage. Since natural gas is considered
clean and economic, it is becoming a preferred choice for people
to meet both household and business energy needs. Although it
is supplied underground, the safety of natural gas transportation
is still a key concern. As a result, building a control system
to effectively monitor the status of distributed support equipment
and gas pipeline systems is a critical issue for companies that
supply natural gas.
The customer in this story has built a system that uses NPort
Server Pro to control all of its sites remotely. The system is
made up of several Windows NT PCs in the control center to connect
to a network of PLCs (Programmable Logical Controllers). With
the help of NPort Server Pro, PLCs at each gas distribution site
can monitor pipeline system variables such as the temperature
and pressure of water, oil, and gas. These data are then delivered
to the PC-based SCADA system in the control center via a TCP/IP
network, allowing the staff in the control center to quickly respond
to any emergency. In this way, the natural gas distribution company
can improve safety requirements for their customers and the public
as a whole.
Overall Benefit:
Saves administrative time and maintenance costs.
