3630 MainStreet Primary Rate Multiplexer
Release 5.3
Alcatel's 3630 MainStreet Primary Rate Multiplexer (PRM) serves as a gateway
on the customer premises to primary rate facilities for a wide range of
equipment. As well, the 3630 MainStreet PRM can be used as a managed network
termination unit on the customer's premises.
The 3630 MainStreet PRM is a high performance, compact, intelligent T1 (1.544
Mb/s) or E1 (2.048 Mb/s) multiplexer, terminating up to 30 voice or data
circuits.
The 3630 MainStreet PRM digitizes analog transmissions and integrates voice
and data circuits for transmission on a primary rate link. The HDSL module
allows T1/E1 rates over the local copper loop without repeaters or generators.
The manual ring down (MRD) module (North America) or GEN-GEN module (Europe)
supports voice interfaces typically used by financial institutions for dealer
room communication applications.
Flexible interfaces
The 3630 MainStreet PRM can be equipped with two T1 (1.544 Mb/s) interfaces
or two E1 (2.048 Mb/s) interfaces. The second interface can be configured to
provide protection switching and drop and insert capabilities. Both T1 and E1
interfaces are available with high bit rate digital subscriber line (HDSL)
interfaces.
The 3630 MainStreet PRM can accommodate:
- a maximum of 30, 2- or 4-wire voice terminations
- 30 V.24, TIA/EIA-232 terminations at speeds up to 38.4 kb/s
- up to 16 X.21 or V.35 terminations at speeds up to 1,920 kb/s
- 24 OCU-DP ports for access to DDS services
- up to 31 64 kb/s co-directional (G.703) terminations, or 16 2B1Q
terminations for 275x MainStreet Data Termination Unit (DTU) connectivity.
These voice and data terminations can be employed in any combination.
Connections for remote data devices
The 3630 MainStreet PRM supports the 275x MainStreet DTUs, which allow for
connections to multiple data devices, with the use of 2B1Q modules. The DTUs
connect to the 3630 MainStreet PRM over a single copper pair, thereby extending
the reach of the 3630 MainStreet PRM for distribution of services. The 275x
MainStreet DTUs support a link distance of up to 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) over
24 AWG twisted pair.
GEN-GEN signaling support
GEN-GEN signaling (generator input, generator output) is a signaling system
for use with dealer room equipment in a financial institution. The 3630
MainStreet PRM offers an MRD (GEN-GEN) module to support GEN-GEN signaling over
an E1 link.
Node and network management
All operating parameters of the 3630 MainStreet PRM are software configurable
and an array of performance statistics allows for a detailed evaluation of
system status at any time. The Alcatel 5620 Network Manager (NM), formerly the
46020 Network Manager*, provides full network management control of the 3630
MainStreet PRM.
Applications
Channel bank application
The 3630 MainStreet PRM can groom up to 30 voice circuits, 30 data circuits
or a combination of these onto a single E1 aggregate. When two 3630 MainStreet
PRM systems feed into a dual E1 card on a 3600 MainStreet Multiservice Bandwidth
Manager system, the port density is 60 voice or data circuits per card slot.
GEN-GEN channel bank
The 3630 MainStreet PRM can be used as a channel bank for GEN-GEN voice
interfaces from dealer boards. Financial institutions using this type of
equipment within their dealer rooms need point-to-point connections for voice
circuits. A connection between the copper pair, using GEN-GEN signaling and an
E1 link, is provided by the institution's private network or by a public service
provider.
Leased bandwidth delivery in the local loop
The 3630 MainStreet PRM can be used in a carrier environment to distribute
multiple leased line services up to 128 kb/s in the local loop. By using the
275x MainStreet DTU and the 2B1Q module, a local loop distance of up to 5.5
kilometers (3.4 miles) over 24 AWG twisted pair is possible.
High speed network termination unit (NTU)
The 3630 MainStreet PRM is often used as a managed NTU by service carriers
for delivering high speed bandwidth services. An HDSL LIM can be added to the
3630 MainStreet PRM to allow delivery of 1,920 kb/s over two twisted pairs in
the local loop at typical distances of up to 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). With a
conventional E1 LIM, the 3630 MainStreet PRM can deliver up to 1,920 kb/s or
several 64 kb/s services over a 2 Mb/s leased line.
