3624 MainStreet Intelligent T1 Channel Bank
Release 12.1
Alcatel's 3624 MainStreet Intelligent T1 Channel Bank (ICB) is a compact,
sophisticated network access product that provides a cost-effective method of
connecting voice and data devices such as telephones, private branch exchanges
(PBXs), routers, bridges, personal computers and servers into a T1 network.
The 3624 MainStreet ICB provides a powerful combination of connectivity,
intelligence and durability. It is an intelligent device that is completely
software configured and managed, either locally or remotely. In addition,
extensive troubleshooting and diagnostics operations can be performed using
software commands.
The 3624 MainStreet ICB supports any combination of:
- voice
- analog data from 2-wire and 4-wire modems
- digital data
Strict compliance with international standards makes the 3624 ICB a highly
reliable gateway to T1 facilities for customer premise applications.
The 3624 ICB carries voice and data circuits over high speed digital
transmission lines. It is ideal for customer premise T1 applications, in either
point-to-point configuration or for access to public networks.
Seamless network management is provided through the Alcatel family of network
management products. With its flexible interfaces, the 3624 ICB can mix voice
and data traffic from virtually any combination of analog or digital devices
onto a single T1 aggregate link.
Applications
The versatile 3624 MainStreet ICB has many applications, including:
- voice, data, and integrated voice and data networking
- point-to-network, point-to-point and feeder applications
- fractional T1 applications
- super-rate operation, providing connectivity for video conferencing,
Computer Aided Design (CAD) graphics transfer and interconnecting LANs over
the WAN
- Dataphone Digital Service (DDS) and Switched 56 network access
- access to Megacom 800 voice networks requiring ringback tone
- automatic and manual ringdown, including private line automatic
Ringdown-to-Foreign Exchange service - Office (PLAR-to-FXO) conversion
- Direct inward dialing (DID) access
- Dialed number identification service (DNIS), including programmable DNIS
connections to loop/ground start - subscriber (LGS) PBX trunk cards
- 2-wire and 4-wire analog data transmissions by modem
Flexible interfaces
The 3624 MainStreet ICB node supports a wide array of plug-in voice and data
modules, such as:
- LGS (loop/ground start subscriber)
- LGE (loop/ground start exchange)
- E&M
- 2-wire and 4-wire transmission-only modules for analog leased line
applications
- Manual ringdown
- OCU for access to DDS or switched 56 kb/s services
- TIA/EIA-232, V.24; X.21 or V.35 DCMs (Direct Connect Modules)
- Tributary T1 (DSX-1) module for PBX connections
- 2B1Q module for connecting to DTUs
Cellular/wireless compatibility
The 3624 MainStreet ICB platform can be equipped with a 24 V power supply,
ideally suited or cost-effective and reliable access to cellular/wireless base
stations.
Repeaterless T1 applications
For use in carrier and campus networks, the 3624 MainStreet ICB channel bank
supports an HDSL (high bit rate digital subscriber line) option for repeaterless
T1 applications. The HDSL technology is implemented in the IHTU (integrated HDSL
termination unit) module, which brings the simplicity of POTS-like installation
and engineering to the high speed services arena. The IHTU also extends T1 loop
reach by a factor of two to four, significantly reducing deployment costs. The
net result is the ability to quickly and economically deploy new, high speed
services with fiber-like quality over unconditioned twisted pair.
Connection for remote data devices
By connecting any of the 275x MainStreet series of data termination units
(DTUs) products to a 3624 MainStreet ICB node, users can connect a remote device
via a single twisted pair over distances up to 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers). This
eliminates the need for limited distance modems while still providing V.24,
TIA/EIA-232; X.21, TIA/EIA-449 or V.35 compatible connections, and extends
network management capabilities to the desktop.
Node and network management
All 3624 MainStreet ICB node operating parameters are software configurable
either directly at the node or remotely via the network. Direct connections to a
3624 MainStreet system are made through TIA/EIA-232 maintenance ports. Remote
node management is performed through Telnet, any on-net channel, the ESF
Facility Data Link (FDL), or a modem connected to the PSTN.
With the Alcatel 5620 Network Manager (NM), formerly the 46020 Network
Manager*, the user can program the 3624 ICB node to alert the network management
system alarms via a separate modem. With simple network management protocol
(SNMP) integrated into the 3624 ICB system, network management traffic can be
merged with other LAN traffic and routed over an IP network. Network managers
can also monitor and configure a node from a single, open network management
platform. The basic system can be equipped with flash memory to download new
software releases - without visiting the customer site - using file transfer
protocol (FTP) or the 5620 Network Manager.
