The 2720 MainStreet Internet Termination Unit and the
2721 MainStreet Router Termination Unit are integrated routers and Data
Termination Units (DTUs).
Both units provide an integrated router DTU with
end-to-end path management provided by the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network
Manager.
The 2720 MainStreet Internet Termination Unit provides fixed link Internet
access to 128 kbit/s, while the 2721 MainStreet Router Termination Unit
provides frame relay access to Ethernet-connected Local Area Networks (LANs).
The 2720 MainStreet and 2721 MainStreet units were designed to address the
growing demand for affordable alternatives in the expanding corporate
intranetwork and Internet access markets. Both units provide integrated
network management and scalability.
By offering ISDN-like access without the cost and limitations associated
with ISDN -- switched network congestion, long hold times caused by limited
dedicated and semi-dedicated lines, and high capital costs associated with
implementing and upgrading ISDN access -- the units are an attractive
alternative for corporate telecommuting and Internet access.
Integrated Solution
The 2720 MainStreet and 2721 MainStreet units are integrated routers and
data termination units. The 2720 MainStreet Internet Termination Unit provides
fixed link frame relay access to the Internet, while the 2721 MainStreet
Router Termination Unit provides frame relay access to Ethernet-connected
LANs.
On the network side, both systems provide frame relay access at either 64
or 128 kbit/s over a single pair of copper wires at a distance of up to 7 km,
and can provide data compression for throughputs up to 512 kbit/s. This
provides carriers with an economical alternative to permanent switched ISDN or
nailed up connections. On the access side, the units provide a single 10BaseT
LAN port.
Both the 2720 MainStreet and the 2721 MainStreet units can be used with
ANSI T1.601 compliant ISDN U interface repeaters to extend loop lengths beyond
7 km, over 0.5 mm/24 AWG wire.
The 2720 MainStreet System
The 2720 MainStreet Internet Termination Unit was designed to meet the
needs of carriers providing home or small business Internet access, and
provides IP-only access for up to four LAN devices. It is ideal for single PC
connectivity to the Internet via frame relay, or to provide frame relay access
to a corporate network for telecommuters.
The 2721 MainStreet System
The 2721 MainStreet Router Termination Unit provides frame relay access to
Ethernet-connected computer systems. It was designed for applications
requiring advanced routing features.
It provides private network operators and carriers with an integrated and
managed DTU-IP/IPX router, thereby allowing carriers to deploy managed
intranetwork and telecommuter services.
Use of the 2720 MainStreet Internet Termination Unit in
an Internet access application showing the versatility of the MainStreet and
MainStreetXpress architectures for building either narrowband or broadband
internetworks.
Integrated Network Management
A key benefit to carriers for these services is an integrated router DTU
with end-to-end path management provided by the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network
Manager. It provides full configuration and O&M control of the interface
for both units.
Support for routing functions is provided by the MainStreetXpress 45020
Node Manager. It provides full configuration and monitoring of the user
routing functions.
Scalable, Expandable
The 2720/21 MainStreet system offers an evolutionary service for existing
Newbridge customers. Backward compatibility allows the unit to operate with
installed 2B1Q and 27LC2 line cards, FRS/FRE cards, and element and network
management software. Scalability can be achieved without large capital
expenditures, by adding 2720/21 MainStreet units and line cards to an existing
Newbridge network.
A carrier can deploy the 2721 MainStreet Router
Termination Unit in a managed intranet application for telecommuters and
remote offices. Intranets can even be extended to valued suppliers and
customers.
